Zenit sign Chelsea target Hulk

Brazil international Hulk, believed to be a long-standing target of Premier League side Chelsea, has left Porto for Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg, the BBC has reported.

With the Russian transfer window open past the close of the English market Zenit have swooped to sign Hulk in a deal the BBC claims is worth £32m. Hulk will be joined by the former Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel, who is said to have left Lisbon for a similar fee.

The Russian transfer window is open until next week but the purchases of Hulk and Witsel are Zenit’s first big moves of the summer, with the club financed by energy giant Gazprom. Zenit are also preparing for a Champions League group that sees them pitted against Italian side Milan, Spanish club Malaga and Anderlecht, perennial champions of Belgium.

Hulk has been capped 14 times by Brazil and featured as an overage player at the London Olympics, where Brazil ended with a silver medal. Witsel, meanwhile, has made 30 appearances for his country, Belgium, and was formerly of Standard Liege.
