Arsenal look to cut their losses on Arshavin

By Adam Mazrani

Wednesday 05 September 2012

With the Russian transfer window not closing until Thursday, the Daily Telegraph reports that Arsenal are attempting to offload Andrei Arshavin on a free transfer having been unable to find a buyer willing to pay a fee.

Arshavin, who was the club’s record signing at over £13m in January 2009, had interested Zenit St Petersburg - where he has enjoyed two previous spells - and Anzhi Makhachkala in his homeland but recent signings for both teams have brought an end to their interest in the diminutive playmaker, who was recently stripped of the Russian captaincy by new coach Fabio Capello after a poor showing at Euro 2012. Now, with Arshavin’s contract expiring at the end of the season and Arsenal desperate to get him off the wage bill, it is hoped that a taker can be found before Thursday’s Russian deadline.
