Chelsea move made me an England international, says Cahill

Thursday 06 September 2012

Gary Cahill has credited his move to Premier League side Chelsea with turning him into an England international, the Daily Mirror has reported, as the former Bolton Wanderers defender says playing in the Champions League meant he could prove himself at a higher level.

Cahill moved to Stamford Bridge in January 2012, leaving Bolton after four years at the Reebok Stadium. The centre-back revealed he felt there were doubts over whether he could make it at international level while he played for the North West club, but added that the opportunity to play in the Champions League with the eventual winners of the competition allowed him to silence the critics.

He said: “The Champions League pushed me on and made me learn. It gave me a chance to play in the big games people could say I had not played in. Certainly coming from Bolton, I was not playing in the Champions League and that was always going to be a ¬question mark over my head. It was nice to answer that…last year.

Cahill featured in the side that progressed through the latter stages of the Champions League, starting both legs of the semi-final against Barcelona until an injury early in the second fixture forced him to miss a number of games towards the end of the season, including the FA Cup final. Cahill however recovered in time to start the final against Bayern Munich, which Chelsea won on penalties.
