Liverpool left Del Piero bid too late

Liverpool did make a last-ditch attempt to bring Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero to Anfield but the Premier League side’s offer came too late, as the former Juventus forward had already settled on a move to Sydney FC, ESPN has reported.

Del Piero, 37, added that while he was flattered by the interest in him from Liverpool, and would have relished playing in the Premier League, he was searching for something entirely different after spending a career in the intensity of Italian football and Serie A. Del Piero believes he has found that in the A-League with Sydney.

Liverpool were scouring the free transfer market in an attempt to bolster their strike force after the transfer window closed with mores outs than in, particularly the decision to let Andy Carroll leave for West Ham on loan without there being a replacement decisively lined up.

Del Piero, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, said: “Liverpool? When I said about the unthinkable clubs [who showed interest] I was also referring to Liverpool. I needed something different in every way.

I would like to live another 50 years to savour all football. The Premier League has always been a point of reference for every player...but I needed something different. It was very close, but this was the right choice.
