Barton ban to stand at Marseille

Friday 07 September 2012

Joey Barton will not be able to make his Ligue 1 debut for Marseille until November after it was confirmed that the 12-game ban he received for his actions in the final Premier League game of last season will stand with his new club, the BBC has reported.

Barton was dismissed while playing for Queens Park Rangers against Manchester City after striking Carlos Tevez and then being involved in incidents with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, with a suspension of a dozen games the punishment handed down by the Football Association.

The former Manchester City midfielder was allowed to leave Loftus Road over the summer with Marseille his eventual destination, but a FIFA law means he must serve the ban at his new club. Barton is eligible to play in the Europa League with Marseille and could play against Fenerbahce on September 20, but cannot play in the French league or cup for another two months.
