Moldova expecting an England aerial onslaught
Ahead of England’s opening World Cup qualification contest on Friday in Moldova, the hosts have said that they are expecting England to play many “long balls”, the Daily Mirror reports.
Moldovan assistant manager Ivan Testemitanu, who appeared the last time England travelled to Chisinau in 1996 and missed a penalty in his country’s 3-0 defeat, has experienced English football first hand by obtaining his coaching badges after a two week training with period with Stoke City under Tony Pulis. However, Testemitanu has refused to bring Stoke’s power-play into the Moldovan national team, claiming: “I think we are a little bit better than that. No long throws. We play with legs and not our hands.” Meanwhile, Moldovan defender Igor Armas has stoked the fires ahead of the contest at the Zimbru Stadium by claiming: “England don’t play like the Spanish tiki taka, they play long balls. It will be very important to win the battles in the air. We need to be organised. After Moldova, England will travel home and begin preparations to face Ukraine at Wembley on Tuesday night. The match represents a re-match of the Euro 2012 clash, where England came out 1-0 victors and eliminated the home side amidst the controversy of a Ukraine “goal” that appeared to be across the line but was not given.
