Dempsey left in tears by Fulham row

Saturday 08 September 2012

Clint Dempsey made a late transfer deadline day move from Fulham to Tottenham Hotspur but the Independent has reported that the United States international was left close to tears at the way his time with the Cottagers ended. Dempsey also insists he never went on strike, as was claimed by his former club.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Dempsey has spoken at length about the summer-long saga that had appeared destined to end with the 29-year-old moving to Liverpool, a team with which he was linked throughout the transfer window.

Liverpool however left their bid for Dempsey until deadline day and Fulham, angered by Liverpool’s conduct over the transfer before making a bid, declined to accept. That left Dempsey, who had made plain his desire to leave Craven Cottage, in an awkward position and he eventually joined Tottenham with only minutes remaining of the transfer window.

Dempsey said: “I just remember calling my wife and my mom and almost wanting to break down in tears because it was a tough time,” adding: “I did not refuse to play. There were some things that were said that were not true.
