Mullery praises England for Moldova cruise

Saturday 08 September 2012

Alan Mullery has heaped praise on England’s professionalism after watching Roy Hodgson’s side cruise to a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Moldova, Sky Sports reports.

England were comfortable in Chisinau and made a great start to their campaign thanks to a Frank Lampard brace and goals from Jermain Defoe, James Milner and Leighton Baines. Hodgson’s side were professional in their victory and never let Moldova get a chance to rally their home support. Although the margin could have been greater, Mullery was impressed with the way England played and how they controlled the game with ease.

Mullery said: “They’ve gone to a place where the surface is not particularly good and they’ve settled in beautifully. There was some wonderful play in the first half – pass and move, pass and move. They’ve created great chances – the goalkeeper’s made two or three brilliant saves.”

The result puts England top of Group H ahead of Montenegro and Poland who drew 2-2 in their opening qualifier. Hodgson’s side face Ukraine at Wembley on Tuesday in a repeat of the recent Euro 2012 group clash, but the England boss may be without John Terry who suffered an ankle injury against Moldova. Terry’s club teammate Ashley Cole will be fit for Tuesday after recovering from his injury.
