Friedel welcomes Lloris competition at Tottenham

Monday 10 September 2012

Brad Friedel believes the presence of Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur will be good for the club and the players, despite the France goalkeeper being unhappy to learn he was bought as second-choice by Andre Villas-Boas, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Friedel said: “It’s great to have competition. Hugo is France’s No. 1, he’s going to want to play, I’m going to want to play, and so are Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes. I want to play, I’ve always wanted to play. I don’t sign contracts not to play. However, I would never demean the manager by spitting my dummy out if I wasn’t playing.

Lloris moved to White Hart Lane from Lyon on transfer deadline day but soon reports emerged that Villas-Boas viewed the 25-year-old as back-up to Friedel, 41, as well as the former United States international’s long-term successor. Lloris was said to be unhappy with this state of affairs, having been the undisputed first choice at his former club.

However, Friedel believes Lloris will soon be in the team on a regular basis, adding that when he joined Tottenham - in 2011 - he was signed as a short-term measure while the club identified a long-term successor, something Friedel adds he believes the club deserves.

Friedel has thus far played 41 games for Spurs, featuring in all 38 of their league games last season and three at the start of this campaign. Friedel has not missed a league game since the 2003-04 season with Blackburn, making more than 550 appearances in English football.
