Man Utd defender Evans a doubt for Northern Ireland

Monday 10 September 2012

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans may not feature for Northern Ireland against Luxembourg on Tuesday, ESPN has reported, after the centre-back suffered a slight ankle injury.

Evans picked up the problem during his country’s previous match against Russia, which ended in a 2-0 defeat. Evans said after the match that his ankle was bothering him throughout the 90 minutes, but he was able to train with the rest of the squad on Sunday.

Michael O’Neill, the manager of Northern Ireland, added that the injury was not serious but needed to be handled carefully, stressing that if there was a risk of doing further damage by playing Evans against Luxembourg, it is not a risk either he or Evans would take.

Evans has yet to play for his club this season after missing the start of the campaign through injury, one of a number of stricken United defenders. The former Sunderland loan player has however returned to the United squad, sitting on the bench for the victories over Fulham and Southampton, both of which ended 3-2.
