Levein to resist calls to pick Rhodes for Scotland

Monday 10 September 2012

Craig Levein will not be forced into picking Jordan Rhodes for Scotland despite the Hampden Park crowd on Saturday calling for the introduction of the Blackburn Rovers striker, the Daily Mail has reported.

The fans made their thoughts clear as Scotland toiled to a goalless draw with Serbia, with Kenny Miller selected as the lone frontman in the starting XI and a five-man midfield in support. As the game wore on and Scotland went no closer to breaking the deadlock, Rhodes’ name was sang from the stands by disgruntled supporters.

Rhodes was eventually introduced with less than 10 minutes to play but despite the crowd’s reaction and Scotland’s inability to score against the visitors, Levein is not yet sure if he will call upon Rhodes from the start. Scotland have a second home game in a matter of days against Macedonia.

Although he admitted he could have used his substitutions, Rhodes included, a little earlier, Levein offered no guarantee that Rhodes would start the next match. He said: “I must use my experience. If, every time the fans start chanting for a player, and I put them on because they want them on, then you would be as well not having a manager. The supporters would pick the team.

In the situation we were in, I did what I considered to be the right changes at the right times. I might have gone a little bit earlier with the two substitutions of the strikers. But I felt the game went reasonably well. I’m just disappointed we didn’t get the goals.
