Lallana shock at England call up

By Adam Mazrani

Tuesday 11 September 2012

Adam Lallana has spoken of his surprise as a raft of injuries and absentees led to Roy Hodgson calling the Southampton midfielder into his England squad for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier with Ukraine at Wembley.

Lallana is unlikely to feature but according to the Daily Mail, Hodgson is said to have been impressed with his performances since Southampton have reached the Premier League, particularly in their last gasp 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in their last run-out. Lallana, 24, who featured just once for the Under-21 team, was told the news by club manager Nigel Adkins. “I didn’t think the gaffer was being serious,” said Lallana. “I was at home, about to head into the training ground. I must have asked if he was having me on a dozen times. I’m totally shocked, to be honest. To be called into the senior squad is probably the proudest moment of my career so far.It is every player’s dream. I’m realistic in accepting I might not be that heavily involved but the fact I will be around such experienced players is something I am really excited about. It reflects really well on the club. It shows just how far Southampton have come.

Lallana hit 11 goals last season as the Saints gained promotion from the Championship and has started every game so far this season in the Premier League, although Southampton are yet to win their first point. England got their qualification campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Moldova last Friday and take on Ukraine in a rematch of their clash at Euro 2012.
