England captain Gerrard did not deserve red card, insists Hodgson

Roy Hodgson believes Steven Gerrard should not have been sent off during England’s 1-1 World Cup qualification draw with Ukraine, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Gerrard was dismissed late on for two bookable offences. The Liverpool midfielder received his first caution after catching an opponent with a flailing arm as he challenged for a header, while Gerrard’s second yellow card came after a tackle from behind. Gerrard is the 14th England international to see red.
The sending off means the 32-year-old will now be suspended for England’s next World Cup qualification match, at home to San Marino in October. Gerrard’s colleague for club and county, Glen Johnson, will also be missing after he picked up his second yellow card in as many games, triggering a suspension for the full-back.
Gerrard and Johnson were just two of five England players booked by referee Cuneyt Cakir, who also took the name of three Ukraine players and disallowed a Jermain Defoe goal after the striker made minimal contact with the face of an opponent in the build-up. Cakir is the official that sent off John Terry in Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
Hodgson said: “Gerrard is extremely unlucky to be sent off. The two fouls he was adjudged to have committed weren’t worthy of cards. I thought all the yellow cards were very harsh. I don’t think there were a lot of bad fouls, or fouls full stop. So I’m going to say there were far too many cards for the fouls committed.”
