Hodgson believes England defeat would have been undeserved

Wednesday 12 September 2012

Roy Hodgson has claimed a draw with Ukraine was the very least England deserved from their World Cup qualification match with the Euro 2012 co-hosts, the Daily Mirror has reported. The visitors went ahead in the first-half but a late Frank Lampard penalty delivered a point at Wembley.

Hodgson admitted that he was relieved when Lampard stepped up and converted the spot kick, adding though that it is natural to be so when you have been trailing for much of the match. The England manager added that he felt the team played well and was impressed by the way in which they persevered after falling a goal behind just before the interval.

He said: “We went down to a wonder strike, but I was pleased with the way we kept probing, playing our football and taking chances. We deserved our equaliser. I’m very pleased with the way we stuck at it and worked.

Hodgson went on to say that he thought England’s performance at Wembley was superior to their efforts against the same opposition in the final group game of Euro 2012, when a Wayne Rooney header gave England a slender win. During that match Ukraine saw a goal not given after the ball crossed the line without the officials acknowledgement, a result Hodgson said was harsh on Ukraine - just as defeat for England this time would have been.
