Moutinho praises Tottenham boss Villas-Boas

Thursday 13 September 2012

Porto’s Joao Moutinho has come out in defence Andre Villas-Boas and hinted that he could be ready to join his ex-manager from Porto at Tottenham in the future. The Daily Mirror reports that Moutinho, who had been the main transfer deadline day target for Villas-Boas, only for a Spurs club record £22m deal to fall through at the final moments due to Moutinho’s third party ownership.

Now having to remain in Portugal until January at least, Moutinho says he is fully committed to the club but would not rule out a move away to join his former manager. “Tottenham is not in my head now, although I was flattered by the interest, especially by the coach,” said Moutinho. “Andre Villas-Boas is one of the best coaches in Europe today. The transfer window is closed but now I am focused on Porto and prefer not to talk about something which may or may not happen. Porto is a club which offers maximum stability to help me show my best level. I cannot talk about anything else until that changes.

Moutinho, who has 48 caps for Portugal and starred in their run to the semi-finals at Euro 2012, previously worked with Villas-Boas at Porto in the 2010-11 season. Then Moutinho made 53 appearances and scored nine goals in all competitions as Porto secured an unprecedented treble of an unbeaten league championship, domestic cup and Europa League.
