Wenger happy to wait for new Arsenal contract

Friday 14 September 2012

Arsene Wenger insists there is no need for urgency regarding a new contract, as the Arsenal manager does not want to think about his long-term future yet, the BBC has reported.

Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis had suggested in an interview that the club’s hierarchy wanted to tie down Wenger to an extension to his existing deal, which is due to expire in 2014.

Wenger however believes there is no need for such a move and would prefer to wait to see how he and the team perform in the intervening period. Wenger has been at Arsenal since 1996, with Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United the only manager to have held the same job for longer and still be in situ.

I will assess my own performances and then make a decision,” Wenger said, adding: “I am an Arsenal man. I think I have always shown that. I have to consider if I do well or not.

Two years is a long time in my job. I just want to do well for the club for as long as I can and accept all the rest.

In his 16 years at first Highbury and now the Emirates Stadium, Wenger has won the FA Cup four times, the Charity/Community Shield four times and the Premier League title twice. Arsenal have not though picked up a trophy since 2005, when they last won the FA Cup by beating Manchester United on penalties.
