Norwich vs West Ham - Match preview and team news

Friday 14 September 2012

Following the international break, Premier League football resumes with the Saturday lunchtime kick off at Carrow Road as Norwich City take on West Ham United. The Canaries are coming off the back of a positive 1-1 victory away at White Hart Lane, whereas the Hammers were comprehensive in their victory over Fulham at Upton Park.

Norwich started the season with a terrible performance at Craven Cottage as Fulham beat them 5-0, but two solid draws in their last two outings have seen the confidence levels improve at Carrow Road. Chris Hughton’s side took advantage of a Tottenham side finding their form and snatched a point at White Hart Lane thanks to Robert Snodgrass. The Scottish international was outstanding against Spurs and is looking to keep his form against West Ham this weekend.

Snodgrass’ international teammate Steven Whitaker is back in contention for his full debut after suffering with injury ever since his summer move from Rangers. Hughton also has the returning Elliott Bennett and Elliot Ward fighting for a place in the side and Norwich have a plethora of options up front with Grant Holt, Steve Morison and Simeon Jackson all impressing so far.

West Ham’s main attacking option against Fulham came from Andy Carroll, who inspired the Hammers to their victory in his first start for the club. Bad news for Allardyce came when the on-loan Liverpool striker suffered a torn hamstring, ruling him out for six weeks. The West Ham boss will most likely recall Carlton Cole, who was on the bench in place of Carroll, and has Matt Jarvis and George McCartney available again after injury.

The Hammers have seen mixed fortunes with their season so far, having two home victories and a poor away performance which saw them lose 3-0 to Swansea. Allardyce promised to bring West Ham up at the first time of asking when he took the job last season and delivered his wish, but sometimes the football has seemed a far distance away from the traditional Hammers methods. The addition of Yossi Benayoun on loan and Jarvis hint towards a change in tactic and a trip to Carrow Road will show whether they can improve away from East London.

Norwich have confidence having taken a point from Spurs and believe that if they continue in that same vein of form, then West Ham will pose no problems. The Hammers have different ideas and head to Carrow Road in search of their first away points of the season.
