Man Utd v Wigan - Match preview and team news

Manchester United resume their Premier League campaign following the international break by welcoming Wigan to Old Trafford. The last time the two sides met back in April, Sir Alex Ferguson’ men arrived at the DW Stadium eight points clear of neighbours Manchester City in the title race with only six games remaining.

The Latics would eventually triumph 1-0, sparking their miraculous escape from relegation, while giving the initiative for City to make their late charge which eventually resulted in those dramatic final few minutes of the season which saw United lose their hands on the Premier League trophy.

The game on Saturday threatens to be a rather more sedate affair with United looking for their third consecutive victory following their opening day defeat to Everton. The Red Devils are boosted by the news that both Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa have been passed fit after suffering injuries on international duty in the week.

Certainly Van Persie’s fitness will come as a huge sigh of relief for Ferguson, who continues to be reliant on his summer signing in the absence of the injured Wayne Rooney. Elsewhere, United welcome back Darren Fletcher to their squad after 10 months out with a serious bowel problem. Ashley Young is still doubtful with the knee injury that ruled out of England’s two World Cup qualifiers.

Wigan have had a steady start to the season and despite a horrible record at Old Trafford, manager Roberto Martinez will travel to Old Trafford in high hopes after securing a victory at Southampton in their only previous away fixture in the league this season.

He may have to do without Paraguayan defender Antolin Alcaraz as well as midfielders Jean Beausejour and James McArthur although the latter is expected to be fit.
