Sunderland vs Liverpool - Match preview and team news

By A Different League staff

Friday 14 September 2012

Liverpool will look to distract themselves from an emotional week off the pitch, and get a much needed first victory of the season away to Sunderland on Saturday evening.

The Reds have yet to chalk up a first league victory for new boss Brendan Rodgers, and much debate has already arisen over whether the Northern Irish manager is the right man for the job, and over the deadline day exit of Andy Carroll, without a replacement being lined up.

Liverpool lost their league opener away to West Brom by three goals to nil, drew at home to Champions Manchester City, and were defeated at home to Arsenal before the international break. Sunderland away would not have been the ideal next fixture for Rodgers.

Sunderland meanwhile are also winless from their two fixtures so far, a positive 0-0 away to Arsenal, and a 2-2 away to the high-flying Swans. Liverpool will be the first Premier League visitors to the Stadium of Light this season.

New signing Adam Johnson will face a late fitness test for Martin O'Neill's side, while fellow new boy Steven Fletcher is fit and set to start. On-loan full-back Danny Rose could also start for the Black Cats.

Liverpool could welcome back Spanish full-back Jose Enrique to the line-up, while Joe Allen will start despite carrying an illness through the international break. Nuri Sahin should keep his place in the first-team, and Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini will start up front.
