Wenger urges caution over Arsenal form

Arsene Wenger has asked people not to get carried away by the form displayed by Arsenal in their last few fixtures, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The Gunners demolished Southampton 6-1 on Saturday, causing some observers to speak of Wenger’s side as potential title challengers. The manager however downplayed the suggestion that Arsenal were a better team now even with the sales of Robin van Persie and Alex Song, stressing that will only be known in time.

Wenger added that the true test of Arsenal’s strength will come when they face the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United. He said: “At the moment I don’t know how strong our opponents are. We’ve not played against any of the title contenders yet. It will be important to see how we do against the bigger teams.

The Telegraph notes however that the Arsenal captain, Thomas Vermaelen, has gone on the record to claim that the team is better this season than last, pointing to the improvement defensively as proof. The goal scored by Southampton’s Danny Fox was the first Arsenal have conceded in the league this season, notching three consecutive clean sheets before then.
