Tottenham face a month without Assou-Ekotto

Benoit Assou-Ekotto will miss the next four weeks after a troublesome knee injury erupted ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League win over Reading on Sunday, keeping the defender out of the match and for the foreseeable future, the Guardian has reported.

Spurs Head Coach, Andre Villas-Boas, revealed that Assou-Ekotto could undergo surgery in an effort to correct the problem, the Guardian adds.

Kyle Naughton, usually a right-back, replaced Assou-Ekotto on the left against Reading while the newspaper suggests Villas-Boas might consider moving central defender Jan Vertonghen to the flank, a position the Belgian has played for his country. Vertonghen is also naturally left-footed.

Assou-Ekotto suffered a serious injury in December 2006 and struggled to regain his fitness and his place in the side thereafter, losing out to Lee Young-Pyo and playing only twice in the 2007-08 season.

However, Assou-Ekotto has since then featured on a regular basis for Tottenham, playing at least 30 league games in each of the last three season and missing only three league matches in the last campaign. Assou-Ekotto has made almost 180 Tottenham appearances.
