Premier League round-up: Arsenal breeze past Saints, Man City settle for Stoke draw

Monday 17 September 2012

Another week in the Premier League has passed, and it certainly has not disappointed. Many feared last week’s international break would have affected the pace and excitement of the weekend but with a number of tight thrillers and almighty thumpings, it was business as usual.

Arsenal recorded a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Southampton. Jos Hooiveld opened the scoring with a clumsy own goal after 13 minutes, with the Gunners doubling their lead on the half hour mark with a Lukas Podolski strike.

Gervinho made it three just minutes later and with another own goal from the Saints, courtesy of Nathaniel Clyne, the visitors looked set to enter the break four goal down. Daniel Fox prevented such a thing, scoring in the dying embers of the first-half for Southampton.

The Saints failed to build on Fox’s earlier goal after the restart. Instead they sat back and conceded two further Arsenal goals from Gervinho and Theo Walcott to rack up the hosts’ tally to six goals.

Another of the day’s high-scoring clashes came from Old Trafford, where Manchester United blasted a below-par Wigan side with a convincing 4-0 scoreline. United failed to take advantage of a poor Latics side in the first-half, but a Paul Scholes opener after the break opened the floodgates for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

Javier Hernandez doubled United’s with an hour played in the match, with Alexander Buttner hitting the back of the Wigan net just minutes later. The home side sealed all three points after Nick Powell crashed a thunderous ball past Ali Al Habsi on the Latics goal line in the 82nd minute.

Manchester City travelled to Stoke’s Britannia Stadium expecting a hard fought clash, which they certainly got following a barrage of physical Potters attacks. Peter Crouch put the hosts in front after 15 minutes, with Javi Garcia drawing City level on the half-hour mark.

Both sides enjoyed equal amounts of possession in the second-half, with Stoke almost edging it at times. Neither team could grab the winner however, with both teams probably feeling they deserved more than a point on the day.

In other results, Tottenham kick-started their season with a 3-1 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium. Swansea’s unbeaten streak came to an end after the Welsh side fell foul to Aston Villa, who won 2-0 at Villa Park.

West Brom were subjected to a master class at the hands of an in-form Fulham side, the Cottagers putting three goals past the Baggies without reply. Meanwhile, Chelsea were held to a goalless stalemate at nearby QPR.

Liverpool endured a 1-1 draw against a strong Sunderland side at the Stadium of Light, while Saturday’s early kick-off saw Norwich play West Ham to a scoreless draw at Carrow Road.
