Tuesday 18 September 2012

Manchester United are reportedly tracking Benfica striker Nelson Oliveira, joining both Chelsea and Manchester City who have previously made enquiries for the Portugal international, currently on loan at Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna and the scorer of two goals in his last four games.

According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old has reportedly caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson despite the vast attacking talent at his disposal in Old Trafford in the shape of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez.

Oliveira made his break-through season for Benfica last season making 21 appearances and scoring three goals, including a cameo at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea.

Oliveira’s performances were such that he was included in Portugal’s squad in their run to the semi-finals at Euro 2012, making four appearances at the summer tournament, all from the bench.

United open their Champions League campaign at home to Galatasaray on Wednesday before making the trip to Anfield to take on rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on the weekend.
