Di Matteo heaps praise on Oscar after Chelsea draw

Thursday 20 September 2012

Roberto Di Matteo hailed the performance of Brazil international Oscar in Chelsea’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Juventus on Wednesday, the BBC has reported. Two goals from the Brazil midfielder put the holders of the competition in front, only for the Serie A champions to draw level before full-time.

Di Matteo said: “Oscar did a perfect job tactically and scored two goals. It was a great debut for Oscar. It was just the right moment for him to start the game in the Champions League. He has been mostly away with his national team so we need a bit of time to work with him. He was perfect tonight.

The 21-year-old opened his Chelsea account just after the half-hour mark, striking a long-range effort that deflected off defender Leonardo Bonucci on its way past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Oscar’s second, just minutes later, was a spectacular effort that left the legendary figure of Buffon with little chance of making the save.

Oscar received the ball 25 yards from goal, cushioned the ball into space and, in one movement, curled past Buffon from distance, doubling Chelsea’s lead with about an hour of the match left to play.

Juventus though soon hit back, reducing the deficit through Arturo Vidal shortly within a few minutes and drawing level with 10 minutes to play thanks to Fabio Quagliarella. Di Matteo admitted post-match that Juventus’ goals left him “disappointed and a little bit deflated.
