Young Boys vs Liverpool - Match preview and team news

By Adam Mazrani

Thursday 20 September 2012

Brendan Rodgers and his Liverpool side have an opportunity to take their minds off their indifferent start in the Premier League with a trip to Switzerland to kick off their Europa League group stage campaign to face Young Boys.

Rodgers has chosen to use the match as an opportunity to rotate his squads with the majority of his key players left at home. Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Pepe Reina and Joe Allen, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger were all rested by the Northern Irishman with one eye probably on Liverpool’s eagerly awaited clash with rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Thus, the team that takes the field in Bern on Thursday night will most likely be a mix of seniors who have failed to get much game time this season, such as Jamie Carragher, Jordan Henderson, Nuri Sahin and Stewart Downing, and youngsters such as Suso, Conor Coady, Andre Wisom, Adam Morgan and summer signings Samed Yesil and Oussama Assaidi.

The performances of attackers Yesil, Assiadi and Morgan will come under close scrutiny considering the lack of alternatives to Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini in attack after the club’s decision to let Andy Carroll go out on loan to West Ham without bringing a replacement in before the closure of the transfer window.

Young Boys, who last came to British audiences when losing to Tottenham in a Champions League qualification play-off in August 2010, are likely to play a full-strength side.
