Man Utd midfielder Carrick wary of Liverpool threat

Friday 21 September 2012

Michael Carrick has insisted Liverpool’s slow start to the season does not mean they can be counted out when they host Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Liverpool have yet to win in the Premier League under Brendan Rodgers, recording two draws and two defeats from their opening four games, but did see off the challenge of Swiss side Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday evening, despite Rodgers naming a side somewhat bereft of experience.

But Carrick believes form counts for little any time Liverpool play Manchester United. The England midfielder added that he and his United teammates are expecting a difficult game irrelevant of Liverpool’s struggles under Rodgers so far.

He said: “These games are a one-off - form goes out of the window. The atmosphere is that little bit more special and the fans are certainly up for it more.” The former Tottenham Hotspur player added that United are ignoring Liverpool’s winless start, stressing the visitors must approach the game with the utmost professionalism.

The Mirror notes that United have not won on their last five trips to Anfield, losing four and drawing once. Last season, a late Javier Hernandez goal gave United a point, cancelling out Steven Gerrard’s opener for Liverpool just after the hour mark.
