Shelvey targets Liverpool start against Man Utd

Friday 21 September 2012

Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey has set his sights on a starting role against his club’s bitter rivals Manchester United when the two meet on Sunday, after starring in a two-goal cameo in Liverpool’s 5-3 away win against Young Boys in the Europa League.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the 20-year-old hopes that his two late goals which took the game away from the Swiss side will be enough to force his way into manager Brendan Rodgers’ plans for Sunday’s big match.

I hope I’ve played my way into the side for Sunday,” said Shelvey. “I don’t know what the manager is thinking regarding that game but since he came in the manager has been first class with me. He has given me opportunities and hopefully by coming off the bench and scoring two goals tonight I repaid him.

Games don’t get any bigger than playing for Liverpool against Man United. It’s what dreams are made of. The atmosphere at Anfield will be electric and I want to be a part of that.

Liverpool had to fight back from 3-2 despite having taken the lead twice in a chaotic night in Bern to get their Group A campaign off to a winning start.

The Reds now head into Sunday’s game with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side looking for their first win in the Premier League season, having currently only taken two points from four matches to sit a lowly 17th in the table.
