Suarez handshake never in doubt, says Man Utd defender Evra
Patrice Evra has said he always intended to shake the hand of Luis Suarez when Manchester United played Liverpool at Anfield, adding that the relationship between the two men was insignificant compared to the importance of respecting the Hillsborough tragedy, according to the Daily Telegraph.
United were the visitors to Liverpool for the first home match since the independent report into the events of April 15 1989, when 96 Liverpool supporters died at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground. A series of events took place on Sunday to mark the findings of the report which exonerated Liverpool fans from any role in the events that led to the deaths.
There was however some discussion as to whether or not Evra and Suarez would shake hands. The pair were involved in a racism row that saw Suarez banned for eight games, and the last time United met Liverpool there was further controversy between the two.
Evra rejected the importance of the handshake in light of the bigger picture, insisting that the occasion should have been the main concern. He said: “The most important thing today was respect," Evra said. "It was a game between two big clubs. There was a big tragedy. People were talking about a handshake but the stories of the clubs is bigger than that. If I hadn't shaken Suarez's hand, I would not be respecting the stories of the clubs.”
