Di Matteo optimistic Cole will agree new Chelsea deal

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is confident that left-back Ashley Cole will extend his deal at the club beyond its expiration date at the end of this season. According to the Daily Mail Di Matteo, who watched Cole score a late winner at home to Stoke City on Saturday to keep the Blues top of the Premier League, believes that Cole has cemented himself as a Stamford Bridge legend.

Cole could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January without needing Chelsea’s approval but Di Matteo is sure that matters will be resolved in the coming weeks.

I’m very optimistic that it will be dealt with before that [January],” said Di Matteo. “He has become a legend - he is now Chelsea through and through. But I wouldn’t say it’s just happened recently. He’s been here many years and has contributed a lot to this club.

He’s a fantastic pro, which I’m not sure whether you know,” Di Matteo continued. “Somebody that's the first one out in training, one of the first into the building with JT [John Terry], trains every day like a professional, reliable, somebody that you could go to war with.

Cole has been Chelsea since his acrimonious transfer from Arsenal in 2006, picking up a league title, four FA Cups, a Champions League and one League Cup in his spell at the club.

Chelsea face Championship side Wolves in their third round Capital One Cup encounter on Tuesday night before travelling to North London to face in-form Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in a crunch top-of-the-table clash.
