Rooney to make early Man Utd return

By Andrew Tuft

Tuesday 25 September 2012

Wayne Rooney is in line to return for Manchester United against Newcastle United in the Capital One Cup less than five weeks after suffering a cut to his leg that threatened to rule him out for two months, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The newspaper adds that in the last week Rooney has returned to full training following the injury, suffered against Fulham in a collision with striker Hugo Rodallega on August 25. The boot of the Colombian opened a gash on Rooney’s thigh that cut down to the bone, forcing the England international to have reparatory surgery.

However, with Sir Alex Ferguson due to rotate his squad for the League Cup tie, Rooney is a name under consideration for involvement. The Telegraph notes though that the manager could hold Rooney back until the weekend’s Premier League match with Tottenham Hotspur, or possibly next week’s Champions League encounter with CFR Cluj of Romania.

One player certain to be involved in the meeting with the Magpies is Darren Fletcher, who has missed almost a year with an intestinal illness, but returned to first team football with a brief substitute appearance against Galatasaray.
