Ferdinand willing to return for England after Terry retirement

By Andrew Tuft

Tuesday 25 September 2012

Rio Ferdinand is open to a return to the England set-up following the retirement of John Terry from international football, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Ferdinand was left out of Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad, while Terry has stepped away from the international scene after being charged by the Football Association for his involvement in an incident with Ferdinand’s brother, Anton.

Ferdinand has never made himself unavailable for selection by the national team despite missing out on Euro 2012, with the newspaper insisting if Hodgson does turn to the Manchester United defender in the wake of Terry’s absence, that Ferdinand will accept the call-up.

That is despite the likely presence of Ashley Cole, who gave evidence supporting Terry during the Chelsea captain’s criminal trial over a racially aggravated public order offence for the incident with Queens Park Rangers defender Ferdinand. Terry was acquitted in July.

Hodgson insisted that he left out Ferdinand from Euro 2012 for purely football reasons, rather than a feeling that Terry and Ferdinand could not co-exist after the long-running issue between the related parties.
