Chelsea’s Ivanovic anticipates healthy rivalry with new boy Azpilicueta

Tuesday 25 September 2012

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has said he has no issue with the club’s signing of Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta despite the fact that the former Marseille player could rival the Serb for his position at Stamford Bridge.

Ivanovic has made a strong start to the season which has included several goals and has so far kept Azpilicueta waiting to make his first-team debut, which could come in Chelsea’s Capital One Cup third round fixture with Championship side Wolves.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Ivanovic claims he is relishing the competition that Azpilicueta will bring.

It's great to have competition between the players, it's very positive,” Ivanovic said. “Cesar is good, he is working very hard and he is waiting for the chance and he will show his qualities and how good he is. One player cannot play in one position all season long.

Ivanovic made 45 appearances in all competitions last season for the Blues, scoring five goals, but was one of the players who missed Chelsea’s Champions League final win over Bayern Munich due to suspension.

Following Tuesday’s League Cup clash, Chelsea travel to in-form Arsenal as they look to preserve their position at the top of the Premier League having won four out of their opening five games.
