Wenger confirms Arshavin is unhappy at Arsenal

By Andrew Tuft

Wednesday 26 September 2012

Arsene Wenger has admitted Andrei Arshavin is unhappy at not featuring in the Arsenal first team, telling the BBC that the Russia international works hard in training but is upset at not being able to break into the starting XI for the Premier League.

Arshavin is expected to play for the Gunners in their Capital One Cup match against League One side Coventry City on Wednesday, where he could be one of the senior players in an otherwise youthful side.

But the 31-year-old has played only 13 minutes of football for the Arsenal first team this season, coming on as a late substitute on the opening day of the campaign in the goalless draw with Sunderland. Arshavin spent the latter half of last season on loan in his homeland, with Zenit St Petersburg, but was unable to seal a permanent move away from the Emirates Stadium before the close of the transfer window.

Wenger said: “He's unhappy he doesn't play because he deeply loves football and practises with 100% commitment. I'm happy to give him some competition on Wednesday night.

I have personally a great respect for Andrey because sometimes some wrong ideas circulated about him - that he doesn't care, but it's completely the opposite,” the manager added.
