Thursday 27 September 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the return to fitness of both Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher as Manchester United progressed in the Capital One Cup at the expense of Newcastle United, the BBC has reported.

Rooney has missed the last few weeks after suffering a severe gash to his thigh but was able to play more than 70 minutes of the match, while Fletcher had missed almost a year after being diagnosed with a bowel condition. But the Scotland midfielder was able to play the full 90 minutes after a handful of substitute appearances previously.

Ferguson said: “Darren Fletcher has had a great 90 minutes and Wayne Rooney had a terrific performance, he tired understandably, but I'm really pleased.

United face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round of the competition, with goals from midfield duo Anderson and Tom Cleverley seeing off the Magpies in United’s first League Cup encounter of the season. Papiss Cisse was on target for Newcastle but it proved to be only a consolation as a strong United side held on to their advantage.
