Ipswich boss Jewell reveals Redknapp call

By Tom Kilbey

Thursday 27 September 2012

Paul Jewell received a telephone call from Harry Redknapp to assure the Ipswich manager that he was not interested in his job, reveals BBC Sport.

This news comes after speculation that Redknapp would be keen to take over the reins at the Suffolk club after a poor start to the season which has seen Ipswich slump to 23rd position in the Championship.

Jewell explained to BBC Radio Suffolk: "Harry rang me last Sunday and said there was absolutely no truth in it." He continued by joking that "the only worrying thing was at the end of the conversation he asked me what the best areas to live were!"

Clearly, the ex-Wigan boss is keen to keep in high spirits despite his side recording just one win all season. His cause has not been helped by a host of injuries, including to strikers Michael Chopra and new signing Paul Taylor. As a result, Ipswich have scored just 5 goals in 7 games, putting pressure on the manager.

Keen to emphasise the communication between himself and his chairman, Jewell explained how he reassured Redknapp that the phone call was unnecessary. "You didn't have to make the phone call, Harry, because if Marcus was going to make a change, I think he'd tell me first".
Jewell will now focus his attention to the weekend when Ipswich face a strong Barnsley side, on a high after a magnificent 5-0 victory over Birmingham. Jewell will hope his players can help relieve some pressure of their boss, and begin to silence the speculation over his future.
