Chelsea’s Terry considering appeal after four-game ban and fine
Chelsea captain John Terry will take legal advice before deciding whether or not to appeal the four match ban and £220,000 fine handed to him by the Football Association after being found guilty of misconduct in an incident with Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
Terry was acquitted of a racially aggravated public order offence in a London Magistrates court over the same event but the FA pursued a charge of using ‘abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour, which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race’, with an Independent Regulatory Commission finding Terry guilty.
The newspaper adds that Terry’s defence team attempt to have the FA’s charge thrown out after Terry was found not-guilty in court, as the governing body’s own rules do not allow for a player to be tried twice for the same offence, known as double jeopardy. However, the FA argued that its regulations only require the offensive language to have been used, with context only considered in sentencing. Terry admitted to using the words.
Terry has 14 days to lodge an appeal upon receipt of the panel’s written judgement but any appeal must be based on legal grounds.
