Djourou praises Bould for Arsenal influence

By Andrew Tuft

Friday 28 September 2012

Johan Djourou has joined the chorus hailing the work done by Steve Bould since becoming assistant manager to Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Bould replaced the long-serving Pat Rice over the summer and has been working extensively on improving Arsenal’s defensive record, with much of training now said to be centred around team shape and how the rest of the XI can help lift the burden on the back four.

That is something Djourou particularly welcomed by Djourou, who noted the midfield is now offering move cover to the defence than in the past. He added: “Our midfielders, Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby, have been doing a great job protecting the defence and that’s what you need at this level. The guys are also working hard up front. Now it is the whole team that defends. There is a massive difference now to what we had before.

Djourou was sure to thank the retired Rice for the years he gave by Wenger’s side but the Switzerland defender has a long-standing relationship with Bould from their time together in the Arsenal youth set-up. Bould was Djourou’s coach at different levels and Djourou believes that understanding, together with Bould’s experience as a centre-back at the highest level, have contributed to Arsenal’s good start to the season.
