Richards close to Man City return

Friday 28 September 2012

Micah Richards is within sight of a return to action for Manchester City after suffering an ankle injury while playing for Team GB at the London Olympics, Sporting Life has reported.

City have started the season with a defence shipping goals, conceding 14 in 16 outings and failing to register a clean sheet in any competition in the campaign thus far. The Premier League champions are currently seventh in the table, having conceded seven goals in five league games and let in more at home than on the road. Indeed, City have the leakiest home defence of any side in the top half.

While Richards has been out injured manager Roberto Mancini has added to the defensive options in his squad, signing right-back Maicon and centre-back Matija Nastasic, providing more competition for Richards in the two positions in which he often operates.

But Richards is not adverse to competition, and is exciting to be near to a return to full fitness with the only club he has played for. He said: “It's probably going to take about two more weeks. I'm happy with the progress made so far because it was quite a bad one, but I can't wait to get back in among the squad.

It is especially hard when you know there are more players coming in and there's more competition. I think you need a big squad. Sometimes last season we had a few injuries and we fell short of the mark and we didn't really get the results we needed.
