Long-serving Liverpool central defender Jamie Carragher has stressed that despite the pride everyone at Anfield is feeling over the performances of some of Liverpool’s youngsters this season, particularly in the League Cup victory over West Brom in midweek, the hard part is yet to come.

The likes of Raheem Sterling, Oussam Assaidi and Samed Yesil as well as academy starlets Andre Wisdom, Jack Robinson, Dani Pacheco, Suso and officially Liverpool’s youngest every player, Jerome Sinclair, have all featured with distinction for the Liverpool first team this season.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo Carragher, who played alongside many of those youngsters at West Brom, spoke of his immense admiration for the manner in which they played.

I’m sure a lot of people looked at the team-sheet on Wednesday night and thought it was going to be a difficult night for us,” said Carragher. “But credit to the young players because they showed fantastic ability and character. They showed great courage to keep getting on the ball, even when we were 1-0 down away from home. They did the same in the Europa League game last week. It was a fantastic night to be associated with the club and I was very proud to be involved in it.

However, Carragher warned that this was not the time for the youngsters to rest on their laurels and that both they and the club must ensure that the appropriate steps are taken for them to establish themselves in the first team.

We believe we’ve got some good kids here but this is just the start for them,” Carragher continued. “Now they need to push on and prove they can perform at that level on a regular basis. We want them to go on and have long careers here. We need some of them to be mainstays of the team for the next decade.
