Chelsea were lucky in the Champions League, claims Arsenal boss Wenger

Saturday 29 September 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Chelsea rode their luck last season on their way to a first ever Champions League success, the Daily Mirror has reported. The two teams meet on Saturday in the Premier League.

Wenger added that he was proud to see a team from the top flight of English football win the tournament, adding that the side which finished sixth at the end of the season winning the trophy reflected very well on the league.

But Wenger, while praising the contribution of Chelsea’s players and in particular, Didier Drogba, added that the Blues were lucky to find themselves in the final. He said: “One piece of luck Chelsea had last season was Drogba in the first part of the season did not play a lot. He came into it in the second half of the season and he made the decision, he was fresh, focused, had a good rest and still hungry to make it happen and had the quality to do it.

Wenger added that the knockout nature of the latter stages of the tournament were also a factor, and that the Premier League is the real measure of the quality of a side. The manager also noted that so much depends on having players fit and available around March and April, which, with the intensity of the Premier League, is easier said than done.
