Kean forced out of Blackburn

By Andrew Tuft

Saturday 29 September 2012

Steve Kean has resigned as manager of Blackburn Rovers after his position was made untenable by rumours surrounding his future at the club, the Guardian has reported. The newspaper adds that the club’s owners also attempted to dictate team selection, which proved the final straw for the Scot.

Kean’s departure brings an end to two years in the manager’s office, during which time the club has been relegated as fan discontent at both his employment and the practices of the owners, Indian firm Venky’s, often came to the fore in the shape of protests and songs at the ground, Ewood Park.

Tim Sherwood, the former Blackburn midfielder, captain of the 1995 Premier League winning side and current member of the backroom team at Tottenham Hotspur is the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Kean. Eric Black, Kean’s assistant manager, will take temporary charge.

Kean declined to comment of the exact reason for his resignation, citing legal advice, but the Guardian claims the appointment of Shebby Singh as the club’s advisor “humiliated” Kean, and the situation was not helped when Singh predicted Kean would be sacked after three games if a certain points total was not met. Singh later apologised but said this week that Kean’s position was “deteriorating” as the week went on.
