Rodgers challenges Downing and Enrique to regain Liverpool places

Saturday 29 September 2012

Stewart Downing and Jose Enrique have to prove they are good enough to play for Liverpool or face being shown the door by manager Brendan Rodgers, according to the Daily Mail.

Both Downing and Enrique have been at Anfield for just over a year, with the Mail claiming Downing has never impressed since his move from Aston Villa - becoming the fourth most expensive player in Liverpool’s history in the process - and Enrique starting well but tailing off dramatically, to the point Rodgers has preferred to play right-back Glen Johnson on the left of defence, Enrique’s natural side, instead. Rodgers also suggested Downing should consider playing at left-back to get in the team.

Rodgers said: “What is important is that you have good communication. I don’t want to waste time waiting until January to tell both players what I know now. So they know in relation to the demands of what we want and certainly what it is going to take for us to succeed and for them to fit into the group.

The manager added that he has no complaints over the talent of either Downing or Enrique, suggesting that the problem lies with the motivation of the players - questioning their “desire and hunger” - and challenging them both to fight for their place in the squad.
