Caulker hails Villas-Boas after historic Tottenham win

Tottenham central defender Steven Caulker has pointed to the club’s first victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in 23 years as proof of the squad’s togetherness and support for new manager Andre Villas-Boas.

The 34-year-old ex-Chelsea boss came under pressure in his first few weeks at White Hart Lane having replaced the popular Harry Redknapp as manager in the summer and then getting off to a shaky start as the Lillywhites failed to pick up a win in their first three games. Villas-Boas’ man-management was also called into question after France international captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was signed on transfer deadline day only to be told that Brad Friedel would remain first choice.

However, according to the the Daily Mirror, Caulker says that four straight victories, including a win over Carlisle in the League Cup and that remarkable triumph at Old Trafford should silence the doubters.

“That’s four wins out of four now, including the cup competitions, and that underlines this is a squad that can go places,” said Caulker. “We’ve got a new manager, with new ideas and he’s brought in a lot of youngsters. They’ve been training with us and lot of them were on the bench today. It’s all positive from our point of view and there’s a great team bond here. You could see from the celebrations at the end - we’re all very much behind the manager.”

Tottenham travel to Greece to take on Panathinaikos in a Group J Europa League clash on Thursday before welcoming Aston Villa to White Hart Lane in the Premier League four days later.
