Arsenal youngster Martinez keen for Premier League debut

In the absence of Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski, Arsene Wenger has put his faith in Vito Mannone to guard the Arsenal goal, but ESPN has reported that one of the Gunners’ other young custodians, Damian Martinez, is eager to get his chance to impress.

Martinez made his first Arsenal appearance during September’s Capital One Cup victory over Coventry City, a match which a much-changed Arsenal side won 6-1. Martinez has also come close to Premier League action this term, having been named as an unused substitute for Arsenal on three occasions.

Speaking to the media in his native Argentina, Martinez insisted that if he was called on to step into the first team on a regular basis, he would be ready. He said: “I am working for that [chance]. They played me and I responded well, so they know they can rely on me. Arsene is very professional, and is very helpful. He treats the best player and the 17-year-old lad the same way. And he has the same demands. And if he has to play the kid that is better than the veteran, he will.

Martinez added that if he is able to play in the Premier League on a regular basis then the manager of the Argentina national team, Alejandro Sabella, would be forced to consider him for a place in the senior set-up.
