Mancini warns Man City to improve or face Champions League exit

Roberto Mancini believes Manchester City will exit the Champions League at the group stage for the second consecutive season unless his players improve, starting against Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening, the BBC has reported.

City fell to defeat in their first match in the competition this year, losing away at Real Madrid having twice led the tie, and been level with the Spanish champions in the dying minutes of the game. Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo eventually settled the scores in Madrid’s favour, leaving City disappointed to have lost out by the odd goal in five.

The BBC adds that City do face a tough task getting out of the group as, along with the champions of Germany and Spain sit their Holland equivalents, Ajax. City were third seeds in the competition and, as a result, face arguably the toughest group of all.

City welcome Dortmund to Manchester this week, however, and Mancini has called for his side to step up to the challenge despite the difficult opposition they face. He said: “If we want to go through, we need to improve very quickly. Like we have improved [over the years] in the Premier League, we need time to improve in the Champions League, but we don't have a lot of time - only five more games, and we need to improve quickly.
