Chelsea target Falcao admits to uncertain Atletico future

Radamel Falcao, the Atletico Madrid striker who put Chelsea to the sword in the UEFA European Super Cup with a hat-trick inside little more than half an hour, has said he does not know if his future will be with his current club or elsewhere, the Daily Mail has reported.

The newspaper suggests that Falcao’s comments are likely to alert Chelsea who, if Falcao was to be made available by Atletico, would be his most prominent suitors. The Champions League holders are thought to be in the market for a striker after letting Didier Drogba leave last summer, with only Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge remaining at the club as natural centre-forwards.

Falcao added that he is happy in Madrid but may not have a choice if Atletico attempt to move him on, as finances may dictate more than his contentment. Atletico failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League, finishing fifth in 2011-12, two points adrift of Malaga. As such, the club missed out on a windfall that could have been big enough to retain Falcao a little longer.

The 26-year-old Colombia international said: “The situation depends not only on the players and the management but also the economy of the clubs and even the country. I could only go by what was said by the club and they said it would be difficult for me to stay if they did not reach the Champions League.
