Dempsey: Tottenham can win the Europa League

Clint Dempsey believes Tottenham Hotspur should consider winning the Europa League outright as a viable target for their participation in the competition this season, the Daily Mail has reported.

Dempsey was part of the Fulham side that in 2010 reached the final of the tournament, only to lose to Atletico Madrid. The Mail adds however that Dempsey guaranteed himself a place in Fulham’s history books during the Cottagers’ run to the final, in particular with his spectacular goal against Italian giants Juventus in the epic last 16 meeting between the sides.

Having left Fulham for Tottenham on transfer deadline day, Dempsey believes Spurs can go further than Fulham, while the club’s Head Coach, Andre Villas-Boas, has his own history in the Europa League, having won the trophy with Porto, and recently called for the competition to be treated with more respect.

Dempsey said: “It was tough for [Fulham] to get all that way and not win the final, but it was a great experience and I’m sure everyone on that team will remember it.

We had luck then and we need that now, but we do have a lot of quality in this team. As long as everyone is working hard and focused, you always have a chance. And with the quality we have, I can’t see why we can’t go all the way and win it.

Tottenham meet Greek side Panathinaikos on Thursday evening in their second group match of the campaign, having previously drawn with Serie A outfit Lazio at White Hart Lane.
