Roberto Mancini believes his Manchester City players need to dig deep if they are to avoid exiting the Champions League at the group stage for the second consecutive season, the BBC has reported.

Mancini watched on as City were held at home to a draw by Borussia Dortmund, the champions of Germany. It took a last minute Mario Balotelli penalty to deliver even a point after Marco Reus put the visitors in front shortly after the hour mark.

In their first match in this season’s competition City were on the other end of a late goal, beaten by Real Madrid despite having led the fixture 2-1 with only minutes to go, but two goals, the last from Cristiano Ronaldo, turned the score line on its head.

Mancini said after the match on Wednesday evening that City need to find something more than ability if they are to make anything of themselves in the Champions League this season. He added: “We have to run and fight. It's not enough to just pass. Champions League is another situation - different from the championship. It's not enough to just have quality.
