Liverpool aim to tie down young guns Sterling and Shelvey
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says the club are planning talks with some of the club’s starlets with regards to contract extensions. According to the BBC, Rodgers has fielded on average the Premier League’s youngest side so far this season, spearheaded by the likes of Raheem Sterling, Suso, Jonjo Shelvey and Andre Wisdom, and have won three out of their last four matches to recover from a shaky start.
Indeed, Rodgers is confident that plans are afoot to ensure that Liverpool’s young guns are tied down at Anfield. He said: “[New contracts are] something we’ll look at between now and the next few months. There have been discussions with the club and with representatives, but it’s at an early stage.”
However, Rodgers has stressed the warnings of expecting too much too soon from his young players.
“Young players just need time to develop,” the Northern Irishman continued. “In this country in particular, we see a talent and always think we have to push him up and keep pushing him up. We have to ensure the talents are not just talents at 17, but also at 27, and if they’re managed correctly, then maybe they can go onto 37.”
Many of Liverpool’s youngsters could make an appearance in the club’s Europa League clash with Udinese at Anfield at Thursday night, where Rodgers will be looking to cement his team’s place at the top of Group A.
