Rio Ferdinand is worried that Roy Hodgson has a personal issue against him after the England manager revealed to passengers on his tube train that the Manchester United defender’s international career is effectively over, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The newspaper adds that Hodgson has a left a message of apology with Ferdinand, while Ferdinand has indicated to the Football Association that he wants to move on from the incident. The Mirror also claims however that because of the nature of the incident, Ferdinand fears Hodgson has something against him beyond football.

Ferdinand is said to feel Hodgson’s indiscretion was disrespectful towards him, particularly as Hodgson at that point had not contacted Ferdinand to inform him that he was not part of the England squad that was announced the next day, nor, the newspaper continues, has Hodgson spoken directly to Ferdinand to discuss why he has not been part of any of Hodgson’s squads.

Having left Ferdinand out of Euro 2012 for what was described at the time as “football reasons”, it had been suggested that Ferdinand could return to the international scene following the retirement of John Terry. Terry had been involved in a legal issue with Ferdinand’s brother, Anton, and the feeling was that Terry and the elder Ferdinand could not be part of the same squad. Hodgson denied that was a consideration.
